Ming Mom's Nestle Road Pie

NESTLE ROAD PIE (JEANNETTE KELLER)2 cups half and half1 cup milk1/2 cup sugar (plus 3 tablespoons)3 eggssalt1 envelope unflavored gelatin1/4 cup water2 teaspoons vanilla1 1/4 squares of bitter chocolate(below are her word for word directions)1) Combine two cups of half and half and 1 cup milk2) Scald in a double boiler. 3) Mix 1/2 cup sugar and 3 beaten egg yolks.4) Add dash of salt.5) Add to cream mixture.6) Soften 1 envelope unflavored gelatin in 1/4 cup of water.7) Add egg mixture.8) Return to double boiler and cook until mixture coats spoon.9) Add two teaspoons of vanilla. 10) Let cool. 11) Beat 3 egg whites until stiff and add 3 tablespoons of sugar. 12) Fold in custard. Pour into baked pie shell. 13) Grate 1 1/4 squares of bitter chocolate and put on top.14) Cool in refrigerator until set for serving.
